St Cecelia's Church

Commercial to Residential - Completed Development

St Cecelia's Church, a distinctive 1930s building in Sheffield's Parsons Cross area, underwent a significant transformation to convert it into 18 residential apartments with a communal area. Having worked with the developer on several other projects, we were entrusted with coordinating the installation of essential utilities for this project.

St Cecelia's Church

Challenge
Converting a large-scale structure like a church into multiple occupancy units presented unique challenges, particularly in terms of utility infrastructure which required a single incoming electricity supply. The project required careful planning and coordination to ensure compliance with regulations and the efficient distribution of utilities to the individual units. It was important that each individual apartment had its own independent meters, allowing residents to receive individual utility bills.

Solution
• Electrical supply: To accommodate the 18 apartments and communal areas, we arranged for the installation of a 20-way Bemco unit. This single incoming supply enabled the creation of 19 individual low-voltage connections for the flats and an additional service for the landlord's lighting and heating.
• Water supply: We advised the builder on the optimal location for the water main, ensuring that it was installed between the plant room and the site boundary. Given the large diameter of the pipe (63mm), we coordinated the necessary testing and chlorination procedures to ensure compliance with regulations. We also liaised with Yorkshire Water to expedite the offsite excavations and connection process.
• Internal Water Manifolds and Meters: We arranged the delivery and installation of internal water manifolds, which were then connected to individual water meters in each flat. This allowed for accurate measurement and billing of water consumption.

Key Achievements
• Successful conversion of St Cecilia's Church: Our utility services played a crucial role in transforming the historic church into modern residential apartments.
• Efficient utility infrastructure: We designed and implemented a comprehensive utility system that met the needs of the 18 flats and communal areas.
• Compliance with regulations: We ensured that all utility installations complied with relevant regulations, including those related to single incoming supplies and water testing.
• Independent metering: The use of a Bemco unit and individual water meters enabled accurate billing and fair distribution of utility costs among residents.
• Timely project completion: Our effective coordination and planning contributed to the successful completion of the project within the desired timeframe.
